SMARTPHONE VIDEO GEAR GUIDE
Sep 27, 2024Finding the right tools for smartphone video production can be overwhelming with so many options out there, and not all of them live up to the hype.
I’ve tested a ton of microphones, lights, and tripods to cut through the noise, and in this guide, you’ll find my top picks - from mini tripods to my favorite studio lights -- that actually deliver the results you're looking for!
🎤 Microphones
Capturing Crisp, Clear Audio
Boya BY-V2 Wireless Microphone Kit ($39)
One of my favorite budget-friendly microphones that's perfect for beginners. This wireless microphone is compatible with most smartphones making it an easy plug-and-play solution to up your audio game. Double check which version works with your phone.
No more muffled sounds or missing words—this little mic captures your voice loud and clear, even if you're on the move!
Rode SmartLav+ ($60)
A wired lapel mic that packs a punch when it comes to sound quality. It’s ideal for interviews or solo talking-head videos. The best part? You can easily pair it with an extension cord (I recommend one, since the regular cable is quite short) or adapter if your phone needs one. This mic is perfect for creators who want to keep it simple but sound professional.
DJI Mic 2 ($399)
If you’re ready to invest in something versatile, the DJI Mic is your new best friend. It’s perfect for both iPhone and Android users, comes with two clip-on mics, and allows for external microphone connections. It has a range of 250 meters, and the mics double as mini recorders as well. Definitely one of my favorites. Superb quality.
Rode Wireless Go II ($289)
Meet the powerhouse of compact wireless mics, very similar to the DJI mic. With two transmitters that double as body packs, this mic system is perfect for creators who want flexibility without sacrificing quality. Whether you’re doing a vlog, interview, or a dynamic on-the-go shoot, this system’s got you covered with crystal-clear sound.
📸 Tripods and Holders
Keep It Steady
Tripod ($50-$500)
When it comes to tripods, it’s all about stability, height, and flexibility. You can choose from various brands like Benro and SmallRig, offering features like spirit levels for perfectly straight shots. When choosing a tripod, two key factors to consider are its maximum height—especially if you’re planning to do standing interviews—and its weight, which is crucial if you’re frequently on the move while filming.
Benro BK15 Selfie Stick and Mini Tripod ($25)
Always in my backpack or purse! This handy 2-in-1 tool is a game-changer for anyone on the go. It’s light, portable, and perfect for everything from quick selfies to steady interview shots. No need to lug around bulky gear—this compact accessory does it all, making it a favorite among travel vloggers and content creators alike.
Joby Griptight Mobile Device Holder ($40)
This sturdy holder securely locks your phone in place, whether you’re filming horizontally for YouTube or vertically for TikTok. It’s versatile, robust, and pairs perfectly with any tripod, making it ideal for creators who love to switch up their filming style. Just be sure to double-check that it fits your phone’s dimensions!
Gimbal: DJI Osmo Mobile 6 $139
One of my favorite tools for capturing dynamic shots when I’m filming solo is the DJI Mobile 6. It’s an amazing stabilizer that can track your movement automatically, making it look like you’ve got a camera(wo)man following you around! It’s also perfect for filming super steady b-roll shots, adding a professional touch to your videos without the hassle of shaky footage.
💡 Lighting Your Videos
Like a Pro
Most of the time, I film my videos using natural lighting, just standing in front of a window. It’s simple and works great! But having some lights on hand can be a lifesaver, allowing you to film no matter how bright (or dim) it is outside. With just a few backdrop lights, you can instantly make your setup look more professional. Here are the lights I personally use to get that polished look!
GVM (Great Video Maker) Backdrop Lighting ($100-$750)
Want to add a professional touch to your home studio? These adjustable lights let you play with color and intensity, allowing you to create dynamic and visually appealing backgrounds. Super simple setup, immediate professional results!
Godox or Nanlite Forza Softbox ($500+)
When you’re ready to upgrade your lighting, Godox or Nanlite studio lights are fantastic. Known for their soft, flattering light, these lamps can come with softboxes that beautifully diffuse the light, reducing harsh shadows. I have three Nanlites with softboxes in my home studio, very comparable to Godox, and they guarantee great lighting no matter the weather!
